ADHD Parent Coaching: Build Calm and Connection at Home

If you’re a parent of a teen with ADHD, you know how quickly a normal day can spiral into overwhelm — for them and for you. But peace is possible. And it starts with connection, not control.

I’m Ivan Hardcastle — a parent coach, occupational therapist, and father of five. One of my daughters has ADHD. She’s now in college, still learning how to navigate her beautiful, fast-moving mind. The lessons I’ve learned with her — and through the families I coach — have shown me how presence and understanding can transform even the most stressful moments into calm connection.

Let me share two stories that hold the heart of this transformation.

ADHD parent coaching helps you build connection

Story 1: When My Daughter Froze

One morning, my daughter called — in tears. She hadn’t been able to get out of bed all day. Her mind was overloaded with assignments and guilt. She was angry at herself and paralyzed by it.

I didn’t try to fix it right away. I just sat down with the phone in my hand and said, “Tell me how your day’s been going. I’ll tell you about mine.” We just talked.

Then I gently asked, “What’s one thing you can do next?”

Together, we sorted through her thoughts — one class at a time, one step at a time. Eventually, I said, “Can I just sit with you while you start your math homework?”

She said yes.

And as I stayed present with her — just listening, breathing with her — something shifted. Her frustration eased. She began to focus. Then she smiled. She told me about her roommates, about the pizza they were baking. She stood up, walked out of her room, and rejoined the world.

That’s the first key: connect before you correct.
Be present. Your calm nervous system helps your teen’s nervous system find its rhythm again.

Story 2: A Mother Who Found Her Calm

Another parent I coach was struggling with her teenage son. He’d been hiding things, making risky choices, and lying about it. She was anxious, afraid, and ready for a confrontation — but she also didn’t want to repeat the patterns she’d grown up with.

She reached out before having the conversation, saying, “Ivan, I’m scared he’ll shut me out.”

I guided her through a simple mindfulness exercise — a short body scan and visualization to help her calm her mind and reconnect with her heart before speaking with him.

Later, she messaged me back:

“Thank you. I was calm. We talked. It wasn’t perfect, but it was real. He opened up. We made a plan.”

That’s the second key: calm yourself before you connect.
Your grounded energy creates the emotional safety your teen needs to open up.

How ADHD Parent Coaching Helps You Create Peace at Home

ADHD parent — begin with presence and regulation

These moments aren’t magic — they’re practice.
Peace begins when you choose to regulate yourself first, then lead your child with presence, empathy, and gentle structure.

So here’s your invitation:

  • Recognize when you need to pause and ground.

  • Breathe. Calm yourself.

  • Connect. Sit beside, not above, your teen.
