Helping Your Teen with ADHD Thrive: A Simple Practice for Parents

Aug 27, 2025

When your child feels overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in ADHD overload, it’s easy for both of you to spiral. Their world narrows, emotions rise, and nothing seems to flow. And yet — there’s something powerful you can do in those moments.

It begins with you.

When you choose calm, you create calm. When you regulate your own energy, you widen your child’s funnel, helping them move from chaos toward clarity. This isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence.

Step One: Breathe Yourself Steady

Wherever you are — sitting, standing, pausing between tasks — take a slow breath in through your nose. Feel your lungs expand. Pause. Then release your breath gently through your mouth.

Repeat this rhythm. Inhale. Pause. Exhale.

With each breath, notice how your body settles, your thoughts quiet, and your energy opens. Research shows that children with ADHD regulate more effectively when parents model this calm first. You’re not just breathing for you — you’re breathing for both of you.

Step Two: Remember Their Brilliance

As you breathe, bring your teen to mind. Picture them not in their struggle, but in their strengths. Write down, say out loud, or simply imagine three to five ways they shine: their humor, creativity, determination, or the moments they surprise you with kindness.

When we focus on their strengths, we remind ourselves — and them — that beneath the overwhelm, they are already doing their best. And so are you.

Step Three: Choose One Loving Response

Now, think of one thing you can do differently the next time they feel overloaded. It might be as simple as offering a hug, listening without fixing, or giving a heartfelt compliment. Small, intentional choices shift everything.
